Ann Arbor, MI

It's still snowing, it's 23˚F outside, and it's windy. If it was snowing this hard in North Carolina, there would be a state of apocalyptic emergency.
My dad dropped me off at the University of Michigan School of Music for a masterclass. There were undergrads and grads there. Everyone played amazingly. I went up and played too. I only made one memory slip on my Bach, which is pretty good for me. Caroline Coade helped me with bow distribution, projection, and string crossings. I thought this masterclass was very helpful, because it allowed me to make a very good first impression in front of the viola faculty. I also had a lot of fun listening to the other courageous, talented souls who volunteered to play.
My audition happened the next day. The snow welcomed us with what must have been a 15˚F windchill. I had 30 minutes to warm up.
My Umich audition was the best audition that I have had so far. I usually make one or two (or a million) memory slips on my Bach, but I didn't make any memory slips! I also played my Walton and my Kruetzer pretty well (according to Caroline!). I really think I stand a chance of making it into this fabulous programme.

However, if I don't make it, I won't be as sad as I am surprised. Last October, Sheila Browne told me about how amazing Caroline is, and I have been wanting to study with Caroline ever since. Because of that, I have put my all into this audition and I hope that she can see that if she allows me to study with her, that I will be a very dedicated student. I know the school of music has a low acceptance rate and that there may be other applicants who are more dedicated than me. I also know that there will be other opportunities in the future for me to audition for Umich, like grad school.
After my audition, we ate lunch at the famous Zingerman's Delicatessen. Grammy recommended this place to me. This deli is divided into two houses: a savory house and a sweet house (sweet, right?!?). When I walked into the deli, I felt like I just walked into a Trader Joe's. The deli created their own canned and packaged items (including chocolate bars!). The deli is best known for their sandwiches. They had at least 100 sandwich options, but they made sure to mark their top tens and their brand news. I felt like I was in heaven while I was eating my Tarb's Tenacious Tenure sandwich.

We also walked around what is known as the #2 college town in the U.S. (bestcollegereviews.org). The snowflakes were thick and the restaurants were pretty. You could also tell which apartments belonged to college students by looking at their windowsills: if there were white Christmas lights or empty beer bottles lined up against the windowsill, then you were in luck.
We also went back to Zingerman's sweet house. Even though it was freezing outside, we gave into some gelato. Now we are doing homework. I'm trying to finish everything. That way, I won't have to pull an all-nighter Sunday night, which is the night before my UNCSA audition! Stay warm.
